Yankees shoot for 27th World Series title against defending champs
The 2009 World Series gets underway Wednesday when the New York Yankees host the Philadelphia Phillies in the Fall Classic opener (7:55 pm ET, FOX).
Sportsbook.com has the Yankees as a -164 favorite with the over/under at 7.5.
The Yankees beat the Los Angeles Angels in six games in the American League Championship Series, while the defending World Series champion Phillies beat the other LA MLB team, the Dodgers, 4-1 in the National League Championship Series.
Both teams will start left-handed pitchers for the opener; the Phillies will go with Cliff Lee and the Yankees with C.C. Sabathia.
Lee is 16-13 SU with a 2.99 ERA, and got his last start in an 11-0 romp over the Dodgers in Game 2 of the NLCS. Sabathia is 22-8 SU with a 3.17 ERA. His last action also came in a one-sided win – 10-1 against the Dodgers on Oct. 20.
In Game 6 of the ALCS on Sunday, the Yankees moved out in front of the Angels in the fourth inning, when they scored three runs, en route to a 5-2 win.
Starting pitcher Andy Pettitte allowed just one run on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings, and had six strike outs.
And Johnny Damon finished with two hits, including a bases-loaded, two-run single in the fourth. Alex Rodriguez also had two hits and a bases-loaded walk in the fourth that led to the eventual game-winning run for the Yankees.
The Phillies clobbered the Dodgers 10-4 in Game 5 of the NLCS last Wednesday.
The last time the Yankees were in the Fall Classic was 2003. The pinstripers will be gunning for their 27th World Series title.
