HORSE RACING HISTORY
Famous Horses - Seattle Slew

Born: 1970
Died: 2002
Trainer: Paula Turner,
Owner: Paula Turner, Mickey Turner
Jockey: Mike Kennedy
Breeder: Ben Castleman’s White Horse Acres

Seattle Slew was a race horse that won the Triple Crown in 1977, only the 10th horse to accomplish the feat. He was the first and only undefeated Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown winner. His victories included the Champagne, Flamingo, Wood Memorial, Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont, Marlboro Cup, and Woodward. He retired after his four year old season with 14 wins in 17 starts and earnings of $1,208,726, winning championships in each season including Horse of the Year in 1977.

He was foaled at Ben Castleman's White Horse Acres Farm near Lexington, Kentucky, by Bold Reasoning out of My Charmer. He was not expected to be a great racehorse and started his career September 20, 1976 in the Maiden Special Weight six furlong (1,207 m) event, the fifth race at Belmont Park in New York. Seattle Slew was purchased for a mere $17,500. As a colt, Slew didn't look like the typical champion, but overcame many doubters.

In retirement, Seattle Slew stood at stud at the Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Kentucky. Slew was the leading sire of 1984, when his son Swale, who died later that year, won the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. His other best progeny include the talented, but ill-fated, juvenile filly champion Landaluce; Horse of the Year A.P. Indy; and champion sophomore filly Surfside, out of champion Flanders. The primary conduit for Seattle Slew's continuation of his male line has been through A.P. Indy. A.P. Indy has done very well at stud in Kentucky, getting Horse of the Year Mineshaft, among others. Slew was also a leading broodmare sire, his daughters producing, among others, the all-time leading money earning American Thoroughbred, Cigar.

On May 7, 2002, 25 years to the day he won the Kentucky Derby Seattle Slew died in his stall at Hill 'n' Dale Farm. He was 28.

Prominent offspring: A.P. Indy, Slew O’Gold, Swale, Capote, Landaluce, Digression, Slew City Slew, Life at Top, Lakeway, Tsunami Slew, Adored, Slewpy, and Taiki Blizzard

His daughter's best offspring include: Cigar, Golden Attraction, Hishi, Akebono, Mulca, Jade Flush, American Chance, Seeking the Pearl, and Slew or Reality.

Facts:

Slew's Headpiece: Throughout Slew's 2 year old campaign he wore a ring bit to secure his tongue, but from the start of his 3-year-old campaign and ever since he wore an inverted Y distinctive headpiece made by Sure-Win.

Baby Huey: Paula Turner who broke yearlings, gave Slew the nickname "Baby Huey", after the overgrown duck "The Baby Giant" in the comics because he first appeared gangly and big.

Nickname: Slew's name was chosen by Karen to reflect both initial co-owners: Mickey's background in Washington, and Jim Hill's from the slews in South Florida. The initial first choice "White Swan Slew" was turned down in favor of "Seattle Slew". Slew's name became official on January 21, 1976.

The Silks: Karen chose the Yellow and Black colors for the silks so that they would be easily spotted from the grandstand.

Trainers: Slew had two trainers during his career, Billy Turner (1-10) and Doug Peterson (11-17).

Grooms: Slew had two grooms, John Polston at the track and Tom Wade on the farm.

Exercise Rider: Slew had only one exercise rider, Mike Kennedy.

Undefeated Triple:To this day, Slew is the only Triple Crown winner to complete the feat with an undefeated record. After winning the Belmont and the Triple, Slew's record was 9-0.

Triple vs Triple: In the 1978 Marlboro Cup, Slew and Affirmed became the only two Triple Crown winners to race in competition. Slew won the race by 3 lengths over Affirmed. They would race again a month later in the Gold Cup. Slew took second in a photo finish, with Affirmed well behind.
