HORSE RACING HISTORY
Famous Jockeys - Donnie Meche

Born: 10/10/1974  Rayne, Louisiana
Resides:   Lafayette, Louisiana
Family:   Darian, (daughter); Davin, (son).

Donnie Meche is one of many riders to come from the state of Louisiana. Donnie is one half the twin-brother jockey tandem of Lonnie and Donnie Meche. The twins made their riding debut the same day at the same track, but not in the same race.  Lonnie rode a race early on the card.

Donnie is looked on as one of the bad boys of horse racing.  He has clashed with racing officials, even served a one-year suspension.

Donnie is returning to racing for 2006 whereas Lonnie rode regularly in 1998. A third brother, Cody, is currently riding at Oaklawn as an apprentice.

Donnie Meche, 25, rode his first winner at Evangeline Downs in May, 1993, and was leading apprentice rider at Louisiana Downs in 1994. Among Meche's main clients is trainer Steve Asmussen, for whom he has been riding regularly for since the 1998 Hawthorne Race Course meeting. During the 1999 Lone Star Park meet, he and Asmussen combined for five stakes victories. Meche finished second in the Lone Star Park standings after a tight battle with Corey Lanerie, winning 90 races.

Meche finished 1999 with 217 victories in 1,160 starts and earnings of $4,447,127.
