Definitions

Ace High - When the highest card in your hand is an Ace with no pair or other type of hand in poker.

Ace-High - A five card hand that contains one Ace and that Ace is your highest ranking card

Aces Full - A full house with three aces and any pair of cards

Aces Up - A hand that contains two pairs, one of which is Aces.

Action - Checking/Betting/Raising. Game in which players are playing a lot of pots is considered an "action" game.

Active Player - Any player who still has a chance to win the pot.

Add-On - The opportunity to buy additional chips in some tournaments.

All-In - A player is considered to be All-In when he/she bets all his/her remaining chips.

American Airlines – Slang for two Aces.

Ante - Money placed in the pot before the hand is begun.

Auto Blind - This button will automatically post the small or big blind.

Bad Beat - When a hand is beaten by a lucky draw.

Bankroll - The amount of money a players has in play.

Belly Buster - A draw and/or catch to an Inside Straight.

Bet - Money put in play. Amount depends on the type if game.

Bicycle - A straight that is A-2-3-4-5.

Big Blind - A designated amount that is placed by the player sitting in the second position, clockwise from the dealer, before any cards are dealt.

Big Slick – Poker slang for a hand that contains an A-K.

Blind - The bet(s) that must be made by the two players sitting directly to the dealer's left which will start the action on the first round of betting. The blinds are posted before any cards are dealt.

Blind Raise - When a player raises without looking at his hand.

Blind - An opening bet before any cards are dealt.

Bluff - A bet with a weak hand in hopes of getting other players to fold their cards.

Board - All the community cards in a Texas Hold'em game - the flop, turn, and river cards together. Example- "There wasn't a single heart on the board."

Boardcards - The cards that are dealt face-up in a poker game for all players to see. In flop games, five cards are dealt face-up in the center of the table. In Seven Card Stud, four cards are dealt face-up in front of each player.

Bottom Pair - When a player uses the lowest card on the flop to make a pair with one of his own cards.

Bring-In - The forced bet made on the first round of betting by the player who is dealt the lowest card showing in Seven Card Stud and Stud 8 or Better. In Razz (Lowball) it is the highest card showing

Broadway - An Ace high straight (A-K-Q-J-10).

Bullets - A pair of Aces.

Bump - To raise.

Burn a Card- Removal of the top card of a deck by the dealer which will not be part of the game.

Button- A disk that is used to show who the dealer is at that moment.

Buy in - The amount of money required into a game and also the money available to bet in the game.

Call- Making a bet equal to the previous bet.

Calling Station - A player who always seems to call and rarely folds.

Cap - To take the last of the maximum amount of raises allowed per round of betting.

Cardroom - The rooms in which poker is played, or the organizations who run those rooms. Most casinos that offer poker have a separate room, or at least a roped-off area, designated as the cardroom. In some places where poker is legal, you will also find separate cardrooms (not part of a larger casino) dedicated mostly to poker.

Case Chips - A player's last chips.

Cash Out - To leave a game and convert your chips to cash.

Catch- When a draw makes a hand. In essence, when the cards are treating you well.

Check Raise- A player checks his hand on their first opportunity to bet then raises on his next.

Check- Not bet on one's turn to bet.

Check-Raise - When a player first checks and then raises in a betting round.

Chop - To return the blinds to the players who posted them and move on to the next hand if no other players call. It also means to "split the pot".

Cold Call- Betting for the first time, calling a bet and raise at the same time after first checking.

Collusion - When two or more players conspire to cheat in a poker game.

Community - Cards that are dealt face-up and used by all players.

Cowboys - Two Kings.

Dead Man's Hand – When a player holds two pair - Aces and Eights

Deal- Distributing cards to the players.

Deuces - A pair of Twos.

Door Card - First exposed card, or "up" card, in a player's hand in Stud games.

Down Card - Hole cards. Cards that are dealt face down.

Draw- Receiving more cards in a game.

Drawing Dead- Basically you can not winner not matter what card you will get.

Drop – To fold.

Ducks - A pair of Twos.

Early Position - Position on a round of betting where the player must act before most of the other players at the table.

Exposed Card - A card that inadvertently turns face up when it isn't supposed to, such as during the deal in a draw game.

Family Pot- Where everyone at the table is still involved in the pot.

Fifth Street - Also known as the "river" card. In flop games, this represents the fifth community card on the table and the final round of betting.

Five Card Draw - A poker game in which the player is dealt five cards down. They have one draw to replace them and the best high hand wins the pot.

Five Card Stud - A poker game in which each player is dealt five cards, one down and four up, with betting after 2, 3, 4, & 5 cards.

Fixed Limit -Bets can only be made in specified increments.

Flat Call - Calling a bet without raising.

Floorman – A person who makes rulings and decisions.

Flop Games - Poker games like Hold'em and Omaha that are played using community cards that are dealt face up in the center of the table.

Flop- This is the first community cards (shared) dealt at once in a game and shared by all players.

Flush- A poker hand where all five cards share the same suit.

Fold- To give up your cards and remove yourself from play of the hand.

Forced Bet - A required bet that starts the action on the first round of a poker hand.

Four of a Kind - Four cards of the same number or face value.

Fourth Street - In flop games, it is the fourth community card dealt (also known as "the turn") and represents the third round of betting.

Free Card- You get to see an additional card (free card) without having to call or bet.

Freeze Out- Format in a tournament where you cannot re-buy into the game. Your buy in is the limit of your play.

Full House - Any three cards of the same number or face value, plus any other two cards of the same number or face value.

Gut Shot - To draw to or hit an inside straight.

Hand - A player's best five cards.

Heads Up- One on one play, between two players at the table.

High Hand- The best hand in any round of poker.

High-Low - Split pot games.

Hold'em- Poker game where each player receives 2 pocket cards and tries to make the best hand using these 2 cards and 5 community cards (shared cards) dealt to the table.

Hole Cards- The card or cards unseen by the other players playing.

House - The owner’s management of the game who takes the rake and manages the games.

Ignorant End - The lower end of the straight.

Inside Straight - Four cards which require another between the top and the bottom card to complete a straight.

Jackpot - A large number of cardrooms offer sizeable jackpots for certain things, such as the high hand of the hour. The rules vary from cardroom to cardroom.

Keep Them Honest - To call at the end of a hand to prevent someone from bluffing.

Key Card - A card that gives you a big draw or makes your hand

Key Hand - In a session or tournament, the one hand that ends up being a turning point for the player, either for better or worse.

Kick It - Raise.

Kicker - The highest unpaired side card in a players' hand.

Kill - A game in which a player may place an extra bet, causing the betting limits to go up for just that hand. The player posting the bet is the "killer," and the hand is considered a "kill pot." The player is said to have "killed the pot" for the amount of the kill. If one player wins two pots in a row in a kill Texas Hold'em game, he is required to kill by posting a blind small bet on the next hand, with the limits doubled for that hand.

Kill Pot - A method to stimulate action. It is a forced bet by someone who has just won a pot.

Knock – It to check

Ladies - Two Queens.

Late Position- Being among the last to act in a round of betting.

Lead - The first player to bet into a pot.

Limit Poker - A game that has fixed minimum and maximum betting intervals along with a prescribed number of raises.

Limp In - To enter the pot by calling rather than raising.

Limper - The first player who calls a Blind.

Live Blind - Also known as an "option". An instance where the player puts in a dark bet and is allowed to raise,

Live Card(s) - In Stud Games, cards that have not yet been seen and are presumed to still be in play.

Live Hand - A hand that could still win the pot.

Live One - A not so knowledgeable player who plays a lot of hands.

Loose Player- A player who plays a lot of hands no matter what his cards

Lowball - A player who plays a lot of hands.

Main Pot - The only pot an all-in player is eligible to win. The main pot consists of the all-in player's bet plus all player's calls of that bet. Additional bets, placed in a side pot, are contested among the remaining players.

Make - To shuffle the deck.

Maniac - A very aggressive player who plays a lot of hands.

Meet - To meet is to call.

Middle Pair - If you pair one of your pocket cards to the second highest card on the flop, you have middle pair.

Minimum Buy-In - The least amount you can start a game with.

Monster - A very big hand.

Muck- Fold without showing your hand done for strategy.

No Limit- A game where anyone can bet all their chips at anytime.

Nuts- The highest possible hand in a poker game. Expression- “Whose got the nuts?”

Odds - The probability of making a hand vs. the probability of not making a hand.

Offsuit - Cards of a different suit.

Omaha- A game with four down cards and four board cards. You must use exactly 2 down cards and 3 board cards.

Open - To make the first bet.

Open Card - A card that is dealt face-up.

Open Ended Straight - Four consecutive cards whereby one additional (consecutive) card is needed at either end to make a straight.

Open Pair - A pair that has been dealt face-up.

Open-Ended Straight Draw - A straight draw with four consecutive cards that can be completed on either end.

Option - If no one raises the big blind, then the player in that position has the option to raise when their turn comes around. The dealer will typically say something like "your option," to remind them.

Out Button - A disc placed in front of a player who wishes to sit out a hand but remain in the game.

Over Button - A type of button that indicates you are willing to play at higher limits. Any time everyone left in the hand has an over button, the limits go up.

Overcard - A card on the board higher than your pair.

Paints - Face cards (Jack, Queen and King).

Pair- Two cards of the same ranking.

Pass - To fold

Play Back - To raise or re-raise another player's bet

Playing the Board - In flop games when your best five card hand is all five of the community cards

Pocket - Your first two down cards. Hold'em players tend to call them pocket cards; stud players tend to call them hole cards.

Pocket Rockets - A pair of Aces in the pocket or hole.

Position- Positions can be early, middle or late. The place of a player at the table in relation to the opener.

Post - When you post a bet, you place your chips in the pot.

Pot - The money or chips in the center of a table that players try to win.

Pot Limit - This is a game where the maximum bet can equal the pot.

Pot Odds - A mathematical solution to whether or not a particular situation is worth a call. The ratio of the amount of money in the pot to the amount of money it will cost you to call a bet. The greater the pot odds, the more likely you should be to call.

Pot- The total money or chips on the table after all the betting is complete.

Pre-Flop - Before the flop, such as raising pre-flop.

Protect - To induce folding in order to prevent another player from outdrawing you is protecting your hand. This is done by betting and raising so that someone on a draw will fold rather than call to see if their cards come off. A protectable hand is one that is almost always the best, but is vulnerable to being outdrawn. It's easiest to protect a hand in no-limit play, where you can potentially make it as expensive as you like for someone to draw. To protect your cards is to put a chip or some other artifact on them so the dealer does not muck them.

Push - When the dealer pushes the chips to the winning player at the end of a hand. It's also when dealers rotate to other tables.

Put Down - To fold a hand.

Qualifier - In High-Low games, it is a requirement the Low hand must meet to win the pot.

Rack - A tray that holds 100 poker chips in five stacks of twenty chips each.

Rag- A card that helps no ones hand.

Raise- When you increase the amount of a bet after betting has opened.

Rank - The value of each card and hand.

Rap - When a player knocks on the table indicating that he/she has checked.

Re-buy - The amount of money a player pays to add a fixed number of chips to his/her stack in a tournament.

Redraw - After you get your initial draw, picking up another draw. For example, if you hold 8h3h and the flop comes Th9h2s, you have a flush draw. If the turn is the 7h, you have made your flush and picked up a straight flush redraw.

Re-raise - A second raise after the initial raise in a round. This occurs when a player raises after a raise by another player.

River- The last community card dealt to all players.

Rock- A player who only plays extremely good hands.

Round - A betting round begins after a card or several cards are dealt. Each player is given a chance to act, and the round ends when everyone has either folded to or called the last bet or raise. Each round of betting is followed either by further dealing or by a showdown. In Texas Hold'em, there are four betting rounds (pre-flop, post flop, after the turn, and after the river). A round of hands is one full rotation around the table, so, each player would hold the dealer button once, or be the dealer if no pitcher were present.

Rounders - Poker plays who hustle for a living.

Royal Flush - This is the highest possible ranked hand. To achieve this hand you need an Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and 10 of the same suit.

Satellite - It is a mini-tournament to gain an entry into a larger tournament.

Scare Card - A high card that, when it appears, brings forth a possibility for a better hand.

Seating List – This is a waiting list. A player would put his or her name on this list if there were no seats at the table at which they wish to play.

Second Pair - In flop games, when you pair the second highest card on the board.

Seven Card Stud- A form of poker where 2 cards are down, 4 faced up and 1 last card down. Another variation of stud poker with 7 cards.

Seventh Street - This is the final round of betting in Seven Card Stud and Stud 8 or Better.

Shills - Shills are paid props who help start and maintain poker games.

Showdown - At the end of the final betting round, it's when all active players turn their cards face-up to see who has won the pot.

Shuffle - The mixing and rearranging of the cards before each hand so that the cards occur randomly. This is done by the dealer.

Side Pot- A second pot formed when a player is all in. The side pot holds money the “all in” player can’t win.

Sit In - To join in a game that has already started.

Sixth Street - In Seven Card Stud, this is the fourth "up" card dealt to the player (their 6th card). It is also the 4th round of betting.

Slow Play- A form of strategy by not raising a good hand to incite further betting.

Small Blind- Forced half bet made before any cards are dealt.

Solid - A fairly tight player who hardly goes in.

Speed Limit - A pair of fives.

Split - Tie.

Split Pot - In a game that isn't high-low split, a tie between at least two players. This happens when both players show the same hand. This is common in Texas Hold'em for straights especially when both players are playing the board. In a high-low split game, of course, almost every hand results in a split pot.

Split Pot- Hands in which the pot is split between more than one player.

Spread Limit - A structure in which betting limits have a fixed minimum and maximum bet for each betting round. Any amount in between these limits may be bet.

Stack - A pile of chips.

Starting Hand - The two pocket cards in Texas Hold'em or the first three cards in 7-Card stud.

Stay - When a player remains in the game by calling rather than raising.

Steal- Raising in expectation that all other players will fold.

Straddle - A straddle is a Blind bet which is usually double the size of the Big Blind (and that player may raise when the action gets to him).

Structure - The limits put on the blinds/ante, bets, and raises in any particular game.

Stuck - A player who is losing in a game.

Stud - Refers to stud games in general, however, usually short for seven card stud. Stud games are contrasted with flop games and draw games.

Stud Poker - A form of poker with cards dealt to each person, some being face down and some being face up.

Table Stakes - Table stakes is a rule saying that a player may only wager money they have on the table at the beginning of a hand, in other words, they can't put their car keys down as a bet. It also implies that money may not be removed from the table at any time, although money may be added to one's stacks between hands.

Table Stakes - Betting is restricted to the chips on the table.

Tells- Certain, giveaways, gestures or words by a player that give away the value of his/her hand.

Texas Hold'em- Poker game where each player receives 2 pocket cards and tries to make the best hand using these 2 cards and 5 community cards (shared cards) dealt to the table. Bets can be made after the 2 pocket cards are dealt, after the first 3 community cards are dealt and after the 4th and 5th community cards are dealt. It is the most popular poker game played online.

Third Street - In Seven Card Stud and Seven Card Stud 8 or better, this is the first betting round on the first three cards.

Thirty Miles - Three tens.

Three of a Kind- Also known as "Trips". Three cards of the same number or face value.

Tight - A player who never bets unless they hold a good hand.

Top Pair - In flop games, when the player pairs one of his down cards with the highest card on board.

Treys - A pair of threes.

Trips - Three of a kind.

Turn - Also called Fourth Street in a 7 card poker game.

Two Pair - A hand consisting of two different pairs.

Up Card - A card that is dealt face-up.

Wager - A bet made

Walking Sticks - A pair of sevens.

White- he color for $1 chips in most casinos.

Wild Card - A wild card is a card that can serve as any other card in making your hand.

Winning hand - The hand that takes all the chips in the pot because it was the best hand in a showdown.

Worst Hand - A losing hand.
