New Year Will Start Premier League Transfers

Some teams will be looking to stay in the race and become buyers while others will look to sell. Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are all rumored to be in the market for players as they look to catch Arsenal at the top of the Premier League standings. Sunderland and Fulham are also rumored to be in the market as they look to avoid relegation.

Manchester United is being rumored to have interest in Tottenham strikers Dimitar Berbatov and Jermain Defoe. Berbatov had four goals in Saturday's 6-4 win over Reading and his agent said he want to leave. United would love to add him to their talented roster. Also looking at Berbatov are Bayern Munich and AC Milan from other soccer leagues. Defoe is also on the market and United has expressed an interest. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has said that he will listen to offers. "We are not a selling club, rather we are building for the future," Levy said. "When we have players on long contracts, we have no need to entertain offers."
Chelsea is trying to bolster their squad, especially with John Terry and Frank Lampard out with injuries. They will also be losing Didier Drogba, John Obi Mikel and Michael Essien during the Jan. 20-Feb. 10 African Cup of Nations. Chelsea is looking at Bolton striker Nicolas Anelka. It is also possible that Anelka goes to United or even Manchester City. Liverpool is another team that needs help. They are 10 points back of Arsenal. "We will bring the things we need," manager Benitez said, "Maybe one, maybe two."
The bottom part of the standings may also see teams busy in the transfer market. Last year it was Portsmouth that made transfer moves and had great success. This year, Sunderlund has already offered Reading a lot of money for midfielder Stephen Hunt but was turned down. They are now looking at a possible deal for Blackburn midfielder Robbie Savage. Also looking to deal is Fulham, especially since they now have a new manager in Roy Hodgson. He will want to keep his team out of the bottom part of the standings. Derby is currently in last place and looking like they will face relegation. That could put them in the position of selling players instead of buying. Giles Barnes could easily be put on the market.
