League Cup Quarterfinals

Bodog Life

December 18 2007

Chelsea and Liverpool are coming off tough losses in the Champions League this past weekend but can’t dwell on them too long because they meet in the Soccer Betting quarterfinals of the League Cup on Wednesday.  Chelsea lost at Arsenal 1-0 and Liverpool lost at home 1-0 to Manchester United in Premier League action over the weekend.  In League Cup play, Chelsea and Liverpool played to a 1-1 draw back in August. Liverpool has won the League Cup seven times, the most recent in 2003. One of the semifinal spots has already been determined as Everton beat West Ham last week 2-1.  The other quarterfinals have Arsenal at Blackburn and Tottenham at Manchester City.

Arsenal is not putting much into their game at Blackburn as manager Arsene Wenger has said he will play his second-string team for the League Cup. Lukasz Fabianski is set to start in goal. Top players Cesc Fabregas, Mathieu Flamini, Aleksandr Helb, Robin van Persie, Emmanuel Adebayor and Tomas Rosicky will all be rested.  Blackburn is expected to play all of their top players. Blackburn midfielder Robbie Savage says Tuesday’s game is the biggest of the season. "Tuesday night is the biggest game of the season for us, a chance to go into the semifinals," Savage said. "If we play like we did in the first half against Wigan, we'll get murdered. If we play like we did in the second half, then we'll have a great chance." The two teams played to a 1-1 draw back in August.

Manchester City has won all 10 of its home matches in all competitions this season.  Last year they did lose at home to the Spurs though. "City's home record is very impressive and it will be difficult to get any reward there, but if we play as well as we can, we can do it," Tottenham manager Juande Ramos said. "I believe my players are getting to know what is expected of them and I've been very pleased with the last few games." Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson said he will start Joe Hart in goal.  That may not be his second string goalkeeper though since he is on the verge of replacing Andreas Isaksson anyway. "It is very close between them, although we have planned for a long time to play Hart in this game," Eriksson said. "They have been prepared for it (my decision) and will no doubt be waiting on Wednesday to hear what I have to say."
