Champs Sports Bowl – Purdue (8-5) vs. Maryland (8-4)
8:00 pm Eastern
ESPN
Opening Line: Maryland - 3.5

Both Purdue and Maryland made good progress this season and will meet tonight in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, Florida. Early betting at SBG Global reports that not only is the gambling public pounding on Maryland for the victory but also hitting the total to go Over.

Maryland won five straight games before finishing the regular season with back-to-back losses. Maryland played very well at times this season as evidenced by wins over Florida State and Clemson but played poorly in their last two games of the year, a 38-16 loss at Boston College and a 38-24 defeat to division champion Wake Forest. "Like anything, in football you are as good as your last performance," said quarterback Sam Hollenbach. "That's how you are judged a lot of the time. We are obviously very focused on this game and doing the best we can with this. I think if we take care of business down there that will help."

Maryland will be looking for its third straight bowl victory. The Terps won 41-7 over West Virginia in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1, 2004 in its last bowl appearance. They are 8-10-2 in bowl games.

With sophomore quarterback Curtis Painter leading the way Purdue ranked sixth in the nation in passing offense and 10th in total yards. Painter threw for 3,721 yards, 21 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Purdue had to win three straight at the end of the season before a loss to Hawaii to become bowl eligible because they played a 13 game schedule. "I am pleased for our players that they get this reward," head coach Joe Tiller said. "We have a young team that has worked hard, gotten better over the course of the season and put itself in position to play in this game."

Purdue will look to snap a two-game bowl losing streak. The Boilermakers are 7-6 in bowls, falling 27-23 to Arizona State in the 2004 Sun Bowl in their last appearance.
